Love Your Local Library Mini-Challenge!!

I just love this picture, don't you??
For my time cheerleading I am hosting the Love Your Local Library Mini-challenge. The idea for this challenge was born out of the fact that I had a shift at work at the library today, so I planned on cheering while I was at work. Unfortunately I had to stay home today (weird dizzy spells), but I can still participate as a reader and cheerleader.
I love my local library. I have always been a library-lover, and working at libraries has not dimmed this love in any way. So I am curious about other readers' use of their local libraries. For this challenge, leave a comment and let me know:
  1. What is the name of your local library? What city is it located in?
  2. How often do you go to the library? If you're a regular, do the staff know you?
  3. Do you browse while you're there or just pick up items you have placed on reserve?
  4. What is your favorite thing about your local library?
Here are my answers:
  1. The name of my library is the Crossroads Connection, which is in a local mall. It is located in Bellevue, WA. The closest regional branch, which I would use if I needed more research and browsing is in the neighboring city of Redmond.
  2. I'm at my local library at least once a week, not counting when I work there (I actually am assigned to a whole group of branches, so I am only actually working at Crossroads occasionally). And I can't fairly answer the question about the staff . . . :)
  3. Unfortunately, I almost never browse anymore. It's a sacrifice I have made. I think it comes from putting far too many books on reserve, and being afraid to check out any items that are not already waiting for me. (I have to draw the line somewhere!)
  4. My favorite thing about Crossroads is the location. The Crossroads mall is very much a community place - it is one of the most culturally diverse areas I've ever lived in (and I grew up in Long Beach, CA), and the mall reflects that. The word "mall" does not accurately describe Crossroads - it is not typical in any way. The library reflects this diversity, and even though it is a small browsing collection, it is one of my favorite places both to visit and work.
Your responses don't have to be any where near as lengthy as mine! Just let me know what you think of your library! There will be two prizes given, the Pulitzer Pack from Biblio Brat. Thanks!!
***Edit: I forgot to let you all know you have a few hours to complete this one! Sorry! I appreciate all the responses so far. This will be going until 5pm PST, which I believe is Hour 12. Thanks for participating!

1. What is the name of your local library? What city is it located in?
Brunswick Library? It's in Brunswick, Ohio.

2. How often do you go to the library? If you're a regular, do the staff know you?
I used to go a lot when I was in high school because I was in the Early Childhood Education program and we had to have childrens books that matched the theme for the week.

3. Do you browse while you're there or just pick up items you have placed on reserve?
I usually browse. I never place anything on reserve, although I may have a determined list before hand.

4. What is your favorite thing about your local library?
Nothing anymore. They just spent a huge amount of money renovating all the libraries in my county and I think our library is worse now. Instead of adding to the library they just made the building look pretty from the outside.

1. What is the name of your local library? What city is it located in?

My Library is the Milford Town Library...located in the town that its named after.

2. How often do you go to the library? If you're a regular, do the staff know you?

I go to the library at least once a week. I'm an addict and its usually what I do on my Saturday mornings. Though sometimes I make some midweek trips too. I recognize some of the staff but they don't know my name and never really go out of their way to be sociable.

3. Do you browse while you're there or just pick up items you have placed on reserve?

I almost always browse when I'm there...and usually pick up more books then I can read. But I love the smell of the library and wandering the stacks. I can't help myself!

4. What is your favorite thing about your local library?

That its so big and holds so many books. The inter-library loan is wonderful too. What I hate about is that they've lowered their hold request to 10 books!!! Its so constricting!

These are some interesting questions. Thanks for hosting this challenge.

1. My local library is the Anne Arundel County Public Library. We go to the West County branch in Odenton, MD.

2. Well, we used to go to the library once a week, but we haven't been in a while. We've been reading books that come in the mail or are from our shelves. The Girl will be participating in the Summer Reading program soon, so we'll be regulars again.

3. We mostly browse. The Girl is all over the children's section, but I generally gravitate toward the just-in shelves.

4. I love that they have a huge children's section, complete with a play area. That keeps the young ones busy. The Girl will say she loves the self-checkout because she like to play with the scanner. ;)

1. What is the name of your local library? What city is it located in?

District Central library.
It's in Dharwad,(State:Karnataka)
India

2. How often do you go to the library? If you're a regular, do the staff know you?

I have started to go to this library recently. I prefer buying books,I have a mini library in my home in mumbai(maharashtra) with over a 100 and odd books.

3. Do you browse while you're there or just pick up items you have placed on reserve?

I always browse whether in a library or in a bookstore.I do search for the books i had in mind first and then its time to see the rest,I might find something very interesting.

4. What is your favorite thing about your local library?
They have old books which would be tough to find otherwise in my usual book stores. I kind of like the smell of old books, thats the best part of borrowing a library book than buying a new one.An old book carries a lot of memories i guess,of its readers.. ;)

1. Germantown Library in Germantown, Md.

2. I go to the library about 2-3 times per month, usually for audiobooks, which I use to commute to work with the hubby. The staff don't know me by name, though some are beginning to recognize me when I walk in and they say hello.

3. I usually don't browse the library, I just pick up the books I place on hold through the Internet system.

4. My favorite thing about my library is the quarterly book sales they hold, which benefit the library with additional funds and provide them with money for programs for the kids, like karoke and game night. The book sales have some great deals...paperbacks for 50 cents and hardbacks for $1! You can't beat that!

This is a great mini-challenge! Yippee...for a first time read-a-thoner, I am having a great time.

1. What is the name of your local library? What city is it located in? Denton Public Library. There are three branches--North, South, and Fowler. The Fowler is the first and original. It is named after a librarian, Emily Fowler. Mom remembers her from when she was a kid going to the library every week.
2. How often do you go to the library? If you're a regular, do the staff know you? I used to go each and every week. Now I go every three weeks. As far as I know, the staff doesn't know me. At least not by name!
3. Do you browse while you're there or just pick up items you have placed on reserve? I never have any items on hold. I'm all about the browsing!
4. What is your favorite thing about your local library? The books of course :) It certainly wouldn't be the chairs.

2. How often do you go to the library? If you're a regular, do the staff know you? I am there on average once a week, and they know me to see me, but not by name.
3. Do you browse while you're there or just pick up items you have placed on reserve? the branch near me is quite small, so there i usually pick up, but if i'm near a bigger branch i browse...
4. What is your favorite thing about your local library? i think i like the familiarity of it, i know where everything is, so i can find what i want quite quickly.

My local library is the Southwood Branch of the Calgary Public Library.

I'd say I'm there once every couple of weeks and I don't think the staff would know me.

Sometimes I browse, but usually I'm just there to pick up books for my wife. I have so many books in my TBR pile I can't justify taking books out to myself.

My favorite thing about our library is probably the homey feel of it, it's nice and small and comfortable. Of course the second closest library is the Fishcreek branch which is interesting in that it's shaped like a pyramid.

We don't have a concept of local library, so I'll let you know the most famous library in the city.

1. What is the name of your local library? What city is it located in? British Council Library. It is located in Pune, India
2. How often do you go to the library? If you're a regular, do the staff know you?
I am not very regular but the staff knows me and some even remember my card number even though I haven't been there for months.
3. Do you browse while you're there or just pick up items you have placed on reserve?
I browse and pick whatever I like, on rare ocassions I reserve.
4. What is your favorite thing about your local library?
The various book programs they hold, very few book signings but there are many activities that go on all thru' the year.

1. Arlington Public Library. I go to the Central Branch. It is in Arlington, VA.

I also use the Library of Congress, since I'm Senate staff. That's in DC.

2. I request books from the LOC all the time and I go to the public library about once a month.

3. I browse at the public library and I place things on reserve. I have to order LOC books online, so I have to know what I want.

4. The YA section!

Name: The Phoenix Branch of the Jackson County Library System (Southern Oregon) Located in Phoenix OR a tiny town between Medford and Ashland of Shakespearean Fesival fame.

When I'm not out of town as now, I go once or twice a month and occasionally send my husband to pick up reserves for me in between. I used to go once a week before the new building was built too far for an easy round trip on foot with book bags.

Yep the staff know me by name.

I do browse while there even tho I've usually got a dozen or more reserves waiting. Especially the new books' shelf as many of those can't be reserved. And the DVD shelf dito.

My fav thing about my library is that it is open. In 2006 the entire system of 15 branches closed for over six months for lack of funding. I was devistated. I blogged about it at the time. I started blogging daily the day I returned the last book April 2006. Before that my blog was more miss than hit.

Since retiring my husband and I travel around a lot. We still use local libraries. At most places we can only browse, (reading newspapers, etc.) but if we are near one of our children we use their library cards. Our of all of those, my favorite is the Portland Public Library (Oregon). The rest of my answers will apply to Portland.

We like to go at least once every other week and no, the staff does not know us.

We use both the website to scout out things we're looking for and their on-line newsletter. But there is nothing like browsing the stacks for finding treasures.

My favorite thing about the Portland Library System is their completeness. There literally is nothing they don't have or can't get. I read somewhere that Portland has the highest library usage of any city in the US and I know why. Also, very friendly people at all branches.

1. What is the name of your local library? What city is it located in?

My closest library branch is the Blake Library in Stuart, Florida.

2. How often do you go to the library? If you're a regular, do the staff know you?

I go pretty irregularly. Sometimes it's to pick up books I can't find anywhere else (BookMooch or the local bookstore), sometimes it's to pick up reference materials I wouldn't want to necessarily own, sometimes it's just to browse. The staff definitely do NOT know me, though.

3. Do you browse while you're there or just pick up items you have placed on reserve?

When I have time, I absolutely browse.

4. What is your favorite thing about your local library?

The availability. I wish it were bigger, with better programs, and more books, but so far I have been able to find pretty much all that I've looked for there.

# What is the name of your local library? What city is it located in? The Rapid City Public Library, in Rapid City.
# How often do you go to the library? If you're a regular, do the staff know you? Every couple of weeks, more often if holds come in. No, the staff are pretty unfriendly.
# Do you browse while you're there or just pick up items you have placed on reserve? I always browse the new releases, and occasionally the YA. I rarely browse the stacks unless I'm already back there for something specific.
# What is your favorite thing about your local library? The COFFEE SHOP.

2.How often do you go to the library? If you're a regular, do the staff know you? I go at least once a week. I don't think the staff knows me although I do see the same staff everytime I go!
3.Do you browse while you're there or just pick up items you have placed on reserve? I always browse for awhile to see if anything catches my eye!
What is your favorite thing about your local library?
It is HUGE and has a great selection of books. It also has a great inter-library loan system that I use a lot!

3. Do you browse while you're there or just pick up items you have placed on reserve? Usually just the holds, because if I browse, the pile becomes enormous
4. What is your favorite thing about your local library?
The comfortable chairs and the beautiful stained-glass windows (and the books:)

1. Apache Junction Public Library, Apache Junction AZ
2. twice a year.
3. Unfortunately, my library is geared toward the octogenarian... no fun chicklit comes through and hardly any YA. If it does come through there's usually a 6-8 week wait :o(
4. I like that they accept donations and actually take the donations into circulation. A lot of libraries don't do that.
